Since its introduction, magnetic resonance imaging (MR) has taken on a major role in imaging the sella and hypothalamus. Few would argue that with its multiplanar capability and superior tissue contrast differentiation, MR imaging is the preferred initial modality, surpassing computed tomography, for patients with pituitary dysfunction or visual field defects.
MR imaging allows multiplanar images of the pituitary to be obtained with the patient's head in the neutral position.
